Chapter Forty

"Kellen? I just talked to Lil," Paige called out as she rounded the bedroom corner into the hall. "She's coming out for a visit." She headed down the hall with a limp that continued to fade. Finally getting the hang of the prosthesis—who've thought? Paige smiled.

She moved into the living room and saw Kellen standing at the end of the dining room table, back to her. "Did you hear me?"

Her smile faded as he turned to face her, phone in hand. He wasn't smiling, and Paige's brows furrowed. "What is it?"

Kellen held up the phone. "I just talked to Grey. There was another break-in."

"I don't understand. I thought the break-ins were all tied to—"

He nodded. "We all did."

"Then I don't understand."

"I don't either." He pulled a heavy sigh and took her hand. "Don't worry about it, okay? Grey will figure it out and, in the meantime, he'll beef up security. Did you say Lil was coming out?"

"Yeah, but maybe it's not the right time."

"No, don't be silly. It's the right time. She's welcome to stay here if she'd like."

"Are you sure?"

Kellen rubbed her shoulders. "She's your sister. Of course, I'm sure. When will she be here?"

"The first of next month?"

"That sounds good to me." He took her hand and led her to the couch, settled down and pulled her to rest in front of him. Nestled in Kellen's arms, Paige closed her eyes and listened to his heartbeat, comfortable with the rise and fall of his chest.

He toyed with the sleeve of the t-shirt Paige had claimed for her own since the day of the break-in. It completed the picture in her head and held secret desires at bay. A wedding was a long-shot and she was okay with that. As long as they were together.

"I like this look on you."

"Hmm?"

"You're lost in your thoughts again, huh?"

She giggled and brought his hand to her lips. "It was nothing important."

"I was just saying that I like this look on you."

"Do you? I thought men didn't like large t-shirts on their woman."

"I can't speak for other men, but I find it kinda sexy. Although, personally, I'm thinking I'd prefer the t-shirt by itself."

Paige sat up, cheeks warm as she met the laughter in his eyes. "I thought you were an old-fashioned kind of guy."

"I am. Very old-fashioned."

"Wouldn't that kind of break the whole idea of 't-shirt without pants' kind of thing?"

Kellen dropped his eyes and rested a hand on top her fingers. A thumb massaged her wrist. The smile had gone from his lips, face tight. "Not if we're married."

"Married?" Paige choked on the word, uncertain she'd heard him right. He cared about her, she didn't doubt that, and she loved him. But a future? She drew in a heavy breath. Could all of the forbidden thoughts become reality?

Kellen eased out from behind her and slid to the floor on his knees. "I lied when I said that I was going to Grey's to drop some paperwork off. It was the only reason I let you stay here alone, knowing that man was loose.
